A prayer for peace…

I generally do not post anything with regards to faith, God or religion. Some things should be private, some things should be shared with only those closest to you. But I received a fairly profound message from a very dear friend today that gave me pause and hit my heart.

“Sirens have been going off nonstop for the last few days. I found myself praying yesterday, which I haven’t done in nearly a decade. Feels like our world is so broken and ugly and I don’t know what to do to help”

While the person behind the message is dearer to me more than most, the message here is important to everyone: don’t get lost in the violence and the anger and the hate. “Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” – Dr. King

So, in the spirit of love and charity, in the spirit of willing ill on no one in these deeply troubling times, I offer a prayer. Something to share with my friends and family. A small way for me to add light to the world and avoid that night devoid of stars.

Dear God, I pray for peace.
Jesus you said, “I, when I am lifted up on the earth, will draw all men to myself.”
As I lift my thoughts to peace, I hope to help lift the thoughts of all people throughout the world to peace.
God, what a blessing it is to know that I can contribute to the peace of this world through prayer.
I know that the same presence of peace that is within me resides in people everywhere – no matter who they are, or where they live.
No matter what religion we profess, each person has been created with the peace of God at the center of their being.
God’s peace harmonizes all seeming disagreements and dissolves all differences.
God’s peace brings great freedom to all.
My prayer and my vision is of peace.
As I hold to this prayer and vision, I remember that peace begins with me.
I pray, in Jesus’ name, Amen

I hope everyone finds some peace in these trying times. We will persevere as we have always persevered, we will reach that mountaintop, we will emerge from the darkness stronger than before. Hold your family and friends close, embrace all of those around you. Spread love and understanding. Spread respect and goodwill. Let love drive out the hate.
